Explore the city of Sibiu
This is a tour in which we included a visit to the picturesque city of Sibiu, a place that manages to combine the past and the present so gracefully and which has been the European cultural capital in 2007. Sibiu is one of the most important and a successful city in Transylvania, with a blooming economic and cultural development, which was also the capital of Transylvania between the 17th – 18th centuries. It was attested for the first time in 1191, under the name of Cibinuim, then as Vila Hermani, and, in 1241, it was destroyed during the Mongolian invasion of Europe. After more than 100 years, in 1366, it was declared town under the name of Hermannstadt.
Sibiu had a significant development during the colonization of the German population and became their administrative center. Unfortunately, in the more recent years that followed the Second World War and the Communist era, the Germans in Sibiu have decreased significantly because of the deportations in Siberia and emigrations to Germany.
Our programs include a visit to the historic city, and the Museum of Folk and Traditional Civilization Astra, one of the most remarkable village museums in Romania. On the way to Sibiu, we will also have a tour of the former Cistercian (Benedictine) Abbey of Cârţa, dating since the 13th century, and we will admire the amazing view of the Transylvanian Alps from the plateau area.
