German community in Transylvania
The German community has been a significant presence in Transylvania, ever since the 12th – 13th centuries when they had been colonized, partly by the Teutonic Knights, thus contributing substantially to the local history. They have settled down mainly in the area between Brasov, Sighisoara, and Sibiu, where they established solid communities based on simple cohabiting rules.
The Germans had clear organizational rules and the responsibility to protect the Southern border of the province. Sadly, these communities have experienced a considerable depopulation when most of them left Romania in the second part of the 20th century.
Our programs include a trip to the most important sites where the German ethnics lived, such as: a visit to Rupea, a small village from the Hartibaciu Plateau and the Rupea fortress dating since the Dacian times, which has been reconstructed by the Germans; a tour of the medieval fortress in Sighisoara, the only medieval fortress in Europe that is still inhabited; a circuit of the fortified churches in the UNESCO patrimony; and an invitation to discover local food, traditions, customs.
